LAFAYETTE – While the spring time is when the “real” games are played, the fall is when the preparations begin.

Ragin' Cajuns baseball is entering their fourth full week of fall practice. Head coach Tony Robichaux is preparing his squad for his 19th season at the helm of the program.

Robichaux's challenge this year for a team that's half and half between returners and newcomers is to establish a new “identity” to help erase the memories of last season's sub-.500 mark.

In a recent media luncheon interview with the local media, Robichaux touched upon the subject of the main emphasis behind fall practice and whether it's a advantage or disadvantage to having so many new faces out on the field this year.

The Cajuns are entering their 42nd season as a Division I program (moved to DI in 1972). Robichaux enters his 19th season at the helm of the program and his 27th season as a Division I head coach (631-439-1 at UL / 894-616-1 overall).

Several Cajuns had a successful summer baseball campaign. The highlights include: Chase Compton named Alaska Baseball League Player of the Year; Cord Cockrell named West Coast League Pitcher of the Year.

The Cajuns roster is filled with several newcomers as the team attempts to create a new “identity” to put last season behind them. In all, the official 35-man roster features 18 new players.

Louisiana is coming off a 23-30 season in 2012, only the fourth sub-.500 mark in 18 seasons under Tony Robichaux.

Since coming off probation – that Robichaux inherited when he took charge of the program – following the 1996 season, the Cajuns have never had back-to-back losing seasons under his guidance (1997-2012).
