No.71 Rice Tops Women’s Tennis

Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss in their spring season opener on a wet Saturday afternoon against No. 71 Rice in Houston, Texas.

“We ran into a very experienced and well coached Rice team today and that was the difference in the match,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “I was very encouraged by the play of Hannah Appleyard and Sandra Ahlqvist doubles play. I thought that we weren't as crisp as Rice and that is something we will have to work on in practice.”

The match was delayed several hours due to rain, and when the two teams took the court the Owls grabbed the doubles point despite the efforts of Appleyard and Ahlqvist. Appleyard and Ahlqvist picked up an 8-4 win over Daniela Trigo and Kim Anicete.

Rice swept singles play, but Ahlqvist had a good showing at No.5 singles forcing a super tiebreaker.

UL returns to action next weekend as the Cajuns head to Birmingham, Ala. to face both UAB and Samford.
