Cajuns Shutout Panthers at Home

UL soccer team advanced to 3-1-1 on the season, as the Cajuns defeated Prairie View A&M 3-0 on Sunday at Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
Despite windy, rainy conditions left over from Tropical Storm Lee, the Cajuns were able to weather the storm and extend their home unbeaten streak to three games with this victory.
In the first half, Delaina McGee opened the scoring, netting a rebound shot in the 12th minute of play. McGee received the ball after Prairie View goalkeeper Bianca Garza saved a shot off the foot of Shelby Isley. Isley recorded four shots in the first half.
The Cajun defensive line held strong, allowing just two shots in the opening period. The Panthers only mustered one scoring chance, a one-on-one situation that saw UL keeper Amanda Moorefield make a well-timed, strong save. Moorefield would go on tally her second clean sheet of the season off of a three save effort.
Sloppy field conditions prevailed in the second half, but Louisiana was able to settle the ball down and make a string multiple passes to lead to scoring chances. The Cajuns were able to put, five shots on goal in the frame to the Panther's two.
UL was able to double the tally in the 76th minute, when Melissa Minton found the score sheet on a strike from 35 yards out. Originally meant to be played as a ball in to Isley, Minton's high arching cross and an Isley dummy caused Garza to misplay the ball and it to find the back of the net. This was Minton's first goal of the year.
Maci Andrus added one more insurance goal in the 90th minute on a pass from Christa Rostohar.
“It is nice to keep our winning streak alive at home,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “I felt like we controlled the ball well in the second half which led to us getting a couple of nice scores in the half.”
The UL soccer team returns to action next Friday as they travel to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on the Lady Devils of Mississippi Valley State before returning home on Sunday to host McNeese State. Post-match coverage of both games will be available on RaginCajuns.com.
