UL Falls in Road Test Against Savannah State

Louisiana's women's basketball team dropped its first game of the road trip to Savannah State on Wednesday night 41-36.
 
UL (4-5, 0-0) shot a season-low 29 percent from the field and didn't have a single player in double figures for the first time this season. Michelle Brunker had seven points for the Cajuns while Josie West had four points and seven rebounds. Ezinne Kalu had nine points and garnered seven rebounds for Savannah State (5-5, 0-0).
 
The Lady Tigers took advantage of a few early Louisiana turnovers to take a 6-0 lead on a fast break layup by Blessing Uba.
 
Brunker put the Cajuns on the board with a three pointer from the corner, but Savannah State responded with back-to-back baskets by Smiljana Cuk to give SSU a 10-3 advantage at the 12:23 mark.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns gained their first lead of the ballgame on a jumper from the free throw line by Olivia Nino to make the score 11-10. Minutes later Nicole Morris connected on a three as the shot clock was winding down to complete a 13-2 run and take a 16-12 advantage.
 
After the Lady Tigers tied the score at 16, Louisiana closed the half on a 6-0 run that included a jump shot from the baseline by Brunker as the buzzer sounded to make the score 22-16 in favor of the Cajuns.
 
UL held Savannah State to 28 percent shooting from the field in the first half resulting in surrendering a season-low first half points. Brunker was the high scorer for the Ragin' Cajuns in the first stanza with five points.
 
The Cajuns extended its lead on a Robbie Brown driving lay-up for a 26-20 lead with 16:52 remaining.
 
SSU leading scorer Kalu put together a five point span of her own on a three pointer and a fast break lay in to cut the score to 26-25.
 
A Rotibi basket gave the Cajuns a five point lead, but Savannah State put together a 12-1 scoring spurt to go in front 37-31 with 5:02 left.
 
Brunker broke a field goal drought of nearly six minutes for UL with a bank shot and Mercedes Johnson had a steal and an assist to Robbie Brown on the next possession to cut the Lady Tiger lead to 37-36.
 
With seven seconds remaining and the Cajuns trailing 39-36, Johnson's three point attempt was off the mark and Savannah State closed out the game at the free throw line.
 
The loss snapped a three game win streak for UL and was the lowest point total since February 28, 2009 when the Cajuns scored 36 in a loss to UALR.

Louisiana continues its three game road trip on Friday against Bethune-Cookman. Tipoff is scheduled at 4:30 (CT).
