The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team swept the season series against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday with a 63-54 overtime win at Earl K. Long Gym.
Kemi Rotibi continued her strong play as she scored 21 points to lead the Cajuns (4-4, 0-0). Rotibi was one rebound shy from a double-double finishing with nine boards and four blocks. Michelle Brunker and Megan Whittaker also finished in double figures with 10 points apiece.
Kelli Jenkins led the way for Southeastern Louisiana (4-5, 0-0) with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Nicole Morris got the Cajuns off to a fast start scoring the first five points including a three pointer to give UL an early 5-2 lead.
The Lady Lions responded by rolling off 10 of the next 12 points and taking a 10-7 advantage on a bucket by sophomore guard Aja Gibson at the 13:15 mark.
Laurie Beaty regained the lead for the Cajuns as she stole the ball and made a fast break lay-up on the other end. On the next play, Krystal Motley drove down the lane and had a nice feed to Rotibi to extend the Louisiana lead to 17-12.
Both teams continued to trade baskets down the stretch until Mercedes Johnson hit a three pointer from the top of the key with one second left in the half to give the Cajuns a 28-24 lead heading into the break.
UL forced the Lady Lions into 10 turnovers and 31 percent shooting from the field in the first half. The Cajuns had 11 field goals in the first half with five of them being from behind the arc.
Southeastern Louisiana went ahead for the first time in the second half on a three ball from freshman guard Symone Miller.
Beaty gave the Cajuns their largest lead in the second stanza on a jumper with 8:19 remaining for a 40-37 advantage.
With 42 seconds remaining, Louisiana guard Nicole Morris was tripped up and fouled as she was crossing midcourt. Morris had to be removed from the game as Whittaker replaced her and knocked down two free throws to put UL in front 49-47.
SELU's Latoria Holder tied the game with two free throws of her own with 25 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The Ragin' Cajuns won the tip and went ahead 52-49 on a three pointer from Brunker. Two possessions later, Brunker drove down the baseline and hit a scoop shot to extend the Cajun lead to 56-51.
UL didn't look back from there as they knocked down clutch free throws the rest of the way to ice the game.
The Cajuns will start a three game road trip on Wednesday, December 14, against Savannah State at 6:00 p.m.
