Women’s Basketball Falls In Close Contest to Nicholls

Despite shooting 43-percent from the field and 52-percent in the second half, the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team fell to Nicholls State, 72-64, at Earl K. Long Gym on Thursday night.
 
With the loss, the Cajuns fall to 0-2 overall, while the Colonels move to 1-1 on the young season.
 
UL had five players tab double-digit points in the contest as senior Mercedes Johnson led the way posting her first double-double of 2011-12. Johnson had 10 points and 11 rebounds and a team-high four assists.
 
Freshman Megan Whittaker looked good off of the bench for the Cajuns going 4-of-6 behind the arc to score 12 of the team's 19 bench points.
 
Both KK Babin and LiAnn McCarthy had 16 points for Nicholls State as Babin had a game-high six assists.
 
After the Cajuns netted a bucket just six seconds into the contest, Nicholls State used a 10-3 run to take a 10-5 edge at the 15:07 mark in the first half.
 
UL cut the Colonels lead to 10-9 with 14:04 left in the half after a made free throw by Kemi Rotibi and a Whittaker three pointer.
 
Nicholls jumped out to its biggest lead of the first half at the 4:40 mark on a pair of Syleida Ellis free throws to make the score 26-14.
 
The Colonels would take an eight-point lead into the break after an 11 point effort by Babin in the first half. Whittaker led Louisiana with nine points going 3-4 from behind the three point line in the half.
 
In the second half, the Ragin' Cajuns came out on fire hitting four of six shots from the field along with two free throws to go on a 13-4 run cutting the Nicholls State lead to one-point, 39-38, at the 16:29 mark.
 
NSU got out to as a much as an eight-point lead twice in the second half as the Colonels led 62-54 with 4:59 remaining in the contest.
 
Down 66-58 at the 3:00 mark, Olivia Nino grabbed her own miss and put it back in to cut the Nicholls lead to 66-60. She then delivered on a deep three a little over a minute later to pull the Cajuns within three points at 66-63.
 
After a flagrant foul by Babin gave UL a chance to come within a point, Robbie Brown would miss two free throws followed by a 6-1 run by the Colonels in the final 1:24 of the contest to make the final 72-64.
 
The Cajuns are set to start a three-game road swing on Monday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. when they head to Lake Charles, La. to face Nicholls State.
