Cajuns Fall in First Road Game to McNeese State

The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team was unable to overcome their turnovers and McNeese State's barrage of threes as they fell 80-59 Monday night at Burton Coliseum.
 
McNeese (3-1, 0-0) started off the game with a full court press and rushed out to a 10-0 lead that included two three-pointers from Cowgirls senior Candace LaCombe.
 
Baskets by Josie West and Robbie Brown got the Cajuns (0-3, 0-0) within eight at 12-4 with 17:31 remaining in the half.
 
MSU's continued its quick start by forcing six Louisiana turnovers, and built a 21-6 lead heading into the first media timeout.
 
LaCombe hit two more threes and Caitlyn Bagget added two of her own extending the Cowgirl lead to 36-9.
 
Senior guard Krystal Motley led the charge by scoring eight points in a Cajuns 14-2 run to cut McNeese State's lead to 38-23 at the 7:12 mark.
 
Bagget and LaCombe carried the Cowgirls in the first half with a combined seven three-pointers and 23 points as they took a 47-31 lead into the locker rooms.
 
Krystal Motley completed an impressive first half with 12 points on four-of-five shooting from the field.  Mercedes Johnson added seven points and a team leading six rebounds for the Ragin' Cajuns.
 
The second half began with a couple 11-3 runs from both teams. McNeese State made the first run to extend their halftime lead to 58-34.
 
UL answered back with an 11-3 run of their own on six points from freshman Robbie Brown to cut MSU's lead to 61-45 with 12:24 left in the game.
 
Louisiana never got any closer as McNeese State's pressure and hot shooting from the outside helped the Cowgirls prevail.
 
MSU forced 19 Cajun turnovers and had four players in double figures.  LaCombe and Baggett finished with 18 and 19 points a piece with a total of 10 threes.
 
Mercedes Johnson recorded her second straight double-double finishing with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Krystal Motley led the Cajuns in scoring with 16 and Robbie Brown added nine points and five rebounds.
 
UL continues its four game road trip as they travel to California to face UC Riverside on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m.
