Cajuns Swept Again, Jags Take Sunday

LAFAYETTE, La. ? Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns dropped the third game of the weekend against South Alabama on Sunday, as the Jaguars completed a sweep by a 7-4 margin to drop the Cajuns to 18-19-1 overall and 8-12 in the Sun Belt Conference.

For Louisiana, it marks the first dip under .500 since March 29, when the Cajuns were 11-12 overall and made it 12-12 the next day with a win over FIU.

The sweep makes it two in a row, and is the first time the Cajuns have been swept in back-to-back conference weekends since joining the Sun Belt. The last back-to-back conference sweeps occured in 1980 as a Southland Conference team, losing in three straight weekends at McNeese State, at Lamar and versus McNeese State.

Justin Robichaux took a hard luck loss in four innings of work, finishing with a line of six hits, five runs, none earned, on no walks and eight strikeouts. He faced 11 batters through the first three innings, setting seven of them down on strikes. It was not until the fourth inning where defensive lapses allowed South Alabama to mount a five-run rally. After a foul pop and a single, back-to-back groundball errors at shortstop should have ended the inning, but the Jaguars put up three base hits to complete the assault before Robichaux ended the inning with his eighth strikeout.

Greg Harmon pitched five innings of long relief, allowing two runs, both solo home runs, on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Cajuns were paced by Chad Keefer and Travis Whipple, who each pushed across two runs on 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 days, respectively. They were the only Cajuns with multiple hits, as Greg Fontenot, Les Smith, Will Long and Kyle Bostick each had one hit.

Louisiana jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI Whipple triple followed by the first of Chad Keefer's RBIs with a single through the left to score Whipple.

The Jaguars posted their five-run inning in the fourth, adding a solo home run in the sixth to take a 6-3 advantage.

Chad Keefer gave the Cajuns their fourth run, scoring Travis Whipple after the two started the inning with back-to-back doubles.

The Jaguars finished their scoring with a solo home run in the ninth to reach the final 7-4 margin.

Louisiana looks forward to a rematch with nationally-ranked LSU at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. for the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic. Jay Walker will take the booth for SportsRadio ESPN 1420 AM, available over the air in Acadiana or online anywhere at ESPN1420.com. RaginCajuns.com will have live statistics available as always.
