LAFAYETTE, La. ? The South Alabama
Jaguars finished off the Ragin' Cajuns 8-6 in the completion of a suspended
game that began on Saturday and stopped in the middle of the seventh due to
lightning. The Cajuns earned two runs in the remainder but could not complete
the comeback from an 8-4 overnight deficit.
Luke Wagley got the Cajuns started on the hill Saturday, and after allowing five
runs in the first inning settled into a groove and pitched two scoreless
innings before allowing a leadoff home run in the fourth. After three complete innings
of work, Wagley left the game with the loss, having allowed six runs, all
earned, on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Blake Haagen entered in relief and allowed another solo shot in the fourth but then
settled into his own groove, holding the Jaguars scoreless for another two
innings before allowing a run across in the seventh. When the game was stopped,
Haagen had thrown four innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with
one walk and one strikeout.
Matt Broussard took over to start the Sunday portion of the game and pitched two
scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.
Offensively
the Cajuns looked to Greg Fontenot, who drove four of their six runs across on
3-for-5 hitting. Les Smith (2-for-4) and Chad Keefer (1-for-5) each notched an
RBI, while Will Long was 2-for-3 with two runs scored after pinch hitting for
Thad Griffen in the fourth inning.
The
game entered a delay due to lightning in the area at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday,
just after completing 6 1/2 innings, and was suspended several minutes later
when it was confirmed that severe weather may stay in the area for the
remainder of the day.
On
Sunday, the Cajuns went to bat in the bottom of the seventh down 8-4. They got
one run closer in the bottom of the eighth with a Greg Fontenot RBI double to
score Will Long.
In
the bottom of the ninth, the Cajuns looked like they might start a rally, scoring
one on a Chad Keefer fielder's choice, but Scott Hawkins grounded into a
game-ending double play.
