The win was the first of the young 2002 season for head coach Dave Poggi and his squad and was the first traditional road (non-neutral site) win in the month of September since a 3-2 overtime win at UL Monroe Sept. 3, 2000.
The win also snapped a four-match road winless streak for Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cajuns last win on the opposition's home turf was Oct. 9, 2001, a 1-0 win at Houston.
The Cajuns (1-2-1) took the lead in the first half on Smith's first goal at the 27:09 mark. ORU (1-3) would even the score at 1-1 when Jodi Kirkhuff scored at 60:57.
Smith would answer for UL Lafayette nearly three minutes later with her second goal of the afternoon at 63:22 to give the Cajuns a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
The Cajuns won the match despite being outshot 21-9 by the Golden Eagles and having only three shots on goal.
The two goals were the first of Smith's collegiate career and marked the highest goal total so far this season for UL Lafayette.
The Cajuns return to action Friday as they open their home slate with a 7 p.m. match against in-state rival Northwestern State at Cajun Field.
