Cajuns Come Up Short

LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team faced off with the Jaguars of South Alabama Sunday afternoon at Cajun Soccer Field. The Cajuns fought hard, but came up empty handed as the Jaguars pulled out a 3-2 victory in double over time.

The Jaguars of South Alabama struck first. In the 14^th minute Brandi Smith won a free ball near field and beat Amanda Moorefield on her right side.

South Alabama found the net again in the 20^th minute when Cortney Stewart split the Cajun defense with a pass which ended up on the boot of Kelly Tarrant. Tarrant beat Moorefield on the right side to go up 2-0.

The Cajuns brought the game within one in the 43^rd minute when Chelsea Balestra found Callie Oliver streaking on the right side of the box. Oliver gathered the pass and beat South Alabama goalkeeper on the right side. It was Oliver's fourth goal of the year, which is the team high on the season.

The game remained 2-1 at the end of the first 45.

The Cajuns tied it up in the 85^th minute when Carleigh Martin found Heather Fuller in box. Fuller beat the keeper and tied the game at 2-2. The game stayed that way through the rest of regular time. It was Fuller's third goal of the year.

In the second overtime period the Jaguars were able to find the back of the net to win the match 3-2. The goal came in flurry of shots in the 109^th minute, when Kristin Sutton corralled a rebound and put the ball in the empty net. South Alabama is now 6-10-2 on the year and 4-4-2 in conference play.

Four different Cajuns had a point in the match as they fell to 4-12-2 on the season and 2-7-1 in Sun Belt play.

Kellie Jestes, Oliver and Balestra are now tied for the UL scoring leader this year each with eight points. Balestra had her second assist of the year. Martin's assist was her first point of the season.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to the pitch Friday Oct. 31 to face ULM at 7 p.m. The match against ULM will the Cajuns final match of the regular season. It will also mark the final home match for eight seniors on the Ragin' Cajuns roster.
