Ragin? Cajuns Fall to Tulane

NEW ORLEANS-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to in-state rival Tulane on Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

The Cajuns jumped out to a 4-0 lead but let the Green Wave chip away until they tied the game in the fifth inning.  Tulane used a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie.  The run would be all the Green Wave would need as neither team was able to score in the final three innings.

Offensively, the Cajuns collected 11 hits on the night.  Jonathan Lucroy, who had two hits in the game, hit a solo homerun in the second inning and added a single. Josh Logan was the only other Cajuns player with multiple hits.  The outfielder had a pair of singles to go along with an RBI.

The Cajuns took the lead in the top of the second inning.  Jonathan Lucroy led off the inning with his team-leading 12th homerun of the year.  Tim Santiago dropped a one-out single into centerfield.  Justin Robichaux moved Santiago to second with a single through the left side of the infield.  Devon Bourque doubled into left field to score the lead runner and give UL a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out.  Josh Logan singled through the left side to score Robichaux from third.  With runners on the corners and one out, William Long hit a deep fly ball to right field to plate Bourque on the sacrifice fly.  The Green Wave escaped the inning with no further runs score, but the Cajuns had an early 4-0 lead.

Tulane scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.  A four-pitch leadoff walk started the inning.  A single through the left side of the infield gave Tulane a pair of runners with no outs.  A fly ball advanced the lead runner to third and a sacrifice fly was enough to plate the runner.  A ground ball ended the inning but saw the Green Wave cut the Cajuns lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tulane trimmed the lead once again.  A one out triple gave the Green Wave put a runner just 90-feet from home.  Tulane used a ground out to plate the runner and cut the UL lead in half at 4-2.

The Green Wave tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.  A single through the left side of the infield started the inning for Tulane.  A ground-rule double down the right field line gave the Green Wave a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs.  Matt Pilgreen entered the game in relief.  A sacrifice fly plated the first run of the inning trimming the Cajuns lead to 4-3.  A fielding error continued the inning and moved the lead runner to third base.  A single through the right side of the infield knotted the score at 4-4.  Danny Farquhar entered the game in relief of Pilgreen.  Farquhar surrendered a single to right field to the first batter he faced, but Nolan Gisclair threw out the runner trying to score from home.

In the sixth inning, Tulane used three hits to take the lead.  The Cajuns retired the first two batters on a ground out and a strike out to start the inning.  A single and a double scored the only run of the inning and gave the Green Wave the lead.  For the second inning in a row, Tulane ended the inning with a play at the plate.  The Green Wave singled to right field and the lead runner tried to score from second, but Gisclair gunned him down at the plate to end the inning.

The one-run lead would hold for the final three innings as neither team was able to score.

The Ragin' Cajuns will continue their road swing as they head Troy, Ala. to face the defending Sun Belt Conference champions.  The series between Troy and UL is slated to begin on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
