Late Inning Heroics Lift Cajuns over Owls

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team needed all three of Josh Logan's hits and all three of his runs to down Florida Atlantic 5-2 on Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Logan finished the game 3-for-4, just a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle.  Each time he reached base, the junior from Magee, Miss. scored.

The runs would prove to be important.  Logan's first run put the Cajuns (18-5, 5-2 Sun Belt) ahead in the first inning 1-0, but a two-run second inning by FAU (18-8, 2-5 SBC) saw UL trailing.  His run in the bottom of the third knotted the score at 2-2.

The most important run of the night for Logan came in the bottom of the eighth inning.  With the score tied at 2-2, Logan singled up the middle.  A sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position and a single up the middle brought him around for the go-ahead score.

The Cajuns also benefited from stellar pitching on the mound by Buddy Glass and Danny Farquhar.

Glass scattered eight hits in 7.2 innings of work.  He surrendered two runs and walked just one batter.  Glass recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts on the night.  Seven of Glass' 10 Ks were swinging strikeouts.  Glass also helped out with his glove.  In the top of the sixth inning with one out and a runner on third, Glass got the batter to pop up to the pitcher and he was able to toss back to third in time to complete the double play and prevent the run from scoring.

Farquhar (1-0) earned his first victory of the season.  The sophomore hurler pitched the last 1.1 inning.  He surrendered on walk and recorded one strikeout, but did not allow a hit or a run.

The Cajuns were the first to scratch out a run.  Logan led off the game with a triple to right centerfield.  A Nolan Gisclair single to centerfield plated Logan from third and gave the Cajuns a 1-0 advantage after one inning of play.

The Owls responded in the top of the second inning.  FAU's Mike McKenna hit a solo homerun to right field to lead off the inning.  The homerun was the ninth of the season for McKenna.  Daniel Cook followed the homerun with a single to right centerfield.  Glass struck out he next two Florida Atlantic batters, but a stolen base moved Cook into scoring position.  A single up the middle scored the runner and gave the Owls a 2-1 edge.  Glass ended the inning with a strikeout.

The Cajuns knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning.  Logan led off the inning with a double to centerfield.  The FAU centerfielder mishandled the ball allowing the speedy Logan to reach third base safely.  A ground out by Gisclair scored Logan from third and gave Gisclair his second RBI of the night.

Logan was again the catalyst in the bottom of the eighth inning.  A single up the middle by Logan started the Cajuns off.  Gisclair laid down a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to move Logan into scoring position.  Jefferies Tatford lined a 1-1 pitch in-between the shortstop and second baseman to score the go-ahead run.  A groundout moved Tatford to second base.  With two outs, Scott Hawkins was intentionally walked to set up the lefty-lefty match-up between the FAU pitcher and Devery Van De Keere.  With a 2-0 count, Van De Keere doubled to right field to score Tatford and Hawkins and give the Cajuns a 5-2 lead?the final margin of victory.

The Cajuns and Owls will continue the series with game two at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Tigue.  The game will be televised on My KLAF.
