Cajuns Take Game Two of Weekend Series

SAN ANTONIO, Texas-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season after claiming a 5-2 victory over Texas-San Antonio (0-3) at Roadrunner Field.

The Cajuns used excellent pitching on a windy day in San Antonio to keep the Roadrunners at bay.

Starting pitcher Brent Solich tossed 6.2 scoreless innings in his first career outing as a Cajun.  He fanned seven batters and allowed only two walks.

Danny Farquhar finished the game for the Cajuns.  He surrendered a pair of runs, but struckout four batters in 2.0 innings of work.

Offensively for the Cajuns, Kolin Hatfield and Nolan Gisclair paced the team with three hits apiece.

Hatfield, making his first start in a Cajuns uniform, went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Gisclair finished the game 3-for-4 with two run batted in.

The Cajuns drew first blood in the second game of the series.  Devon Bourque drew a base on balls to lead off the inning.  With one out and Bourque on first, Lucroy slipped a single past the UTSA second baseman.  The single moved Bourque to third base as the hit-and-run was in effect.  A fielder's choice ground ball by Devery Van De Keere scored Bourque from third base and gave UL a 1-0 edge in the first inning.

In the second inning, the Ragin' Cajuns increased their lead to 2-0.  After being hit by a pitch, Hatfield stole second to give UL a runner in scoring position.  Gisclair dropped a double just inside the foul line in right field to plate Hatfield and give the Cajuns a two-run edge.

The Cajuns pushed across another run in the fourth inning.  With one out, Hatfield doubled off of the right field wall.  A ground out moved the runner to third base.  For the second time in the game, Gisclair came up to the plate with two outs and delivered an RBI hit.  The run was the only run the Cajuns could muster in the inning, but after three and a half innings of play, UL led 3-0.

In the top half of the sixth inning, the Cajuns added an insurance run.  Jefferies Tatford reached base by way of a fielding error by the UTSA first baseman.  He moved to second base on a failed pick off by the pitcher.  Justin Robichaux laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Tatford to third.  A single by Hatfield plated the runner and gave the Cajuns a 4-0 edge.

The Roadrunners threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning.  UTSA led off the inning with a single, but the Cajuns were able to get the lead runner on a fielder's choice.  A groundout saw the Roadrunners with a runner on first and two outs.  Solich walked his second batter of the game and the Ragin' Cajuns brought in Gregory Harmon to finish the inning.

Harmon walked the first batter he faced to load the bases.  With the bases loaded, Harmon fell behind in the count 3-1 before inducing a ground ball to end the inning and the Texas-San Antonio threat.

The Cajuns added a run in the eighth inning.  Tatford singled to centerfield with one out.  Following a popup, Hatfield delivered a two-out double to score Tatford.  The run was the third run of the day for the Cajuns with two outs.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Roadrunners singled to start the inning.  Farquhar fanned the next batter on three straight pitches.  A double plated the first UTSA run of the game.  A single up the middle scored the second run of the inning.  The Cajuns caught the runner trying to get greedy and throughout the runner at second base.  Farquhar ended the inning with a four-pitch strikeout.

The Ragin' Cajuns will conclude the three-game non-conference series with the Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
