Entering the weekend, Malen sat just one victory and one shutout shy of two Cajuns records. Malen, who currently holds the record for most career victories, was tied for second place for most wins in a single season ? tied with her own 2004 total of seven. She tied the record on Friday night against
“Wins, especially a shutout on the road; those are great wins,” head coach Scot Wieland comment after the match. “It is never easy on Sunday's at someone else's place.
Freshman standout Kelli Jestes got things going for the Cajuns. Jestes scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to put the Cajuns ahead, 1-0.
Eight goals in one season put the freshman in second place for most goals in a single season. She trails Stacy Smith (2002) by two for most goals in a season. Smith set the record in her only season at UL with 10.
Jestes' goal came off of an assist from Heather Fuller. The helper was Fuller's third of the weekend. She had a pair of assists in the Cajuns' 3-2 victory on Friday night against
Emily Black netted her first goal of the season to give the Cajuns a 2-0 advantage. Black scored a pair of goals in her freshman campaign last season.
Black's goal came off of an assist by Jestes. Jestes' three points in the match moved her into second place for most points in a season. Once again, Jestes trails Smith for the top spot. Smith set the school record with 21 points in 2002, scoring 10 goals while adding an assist.
Leading 2-0, the Ragin' Cajuns defense took over.
The Cajuns defense has quietly worked in the background this season, but their efforts have not gone un-noticed. The UL defense has held opponents to an all-time low 27 goals on the season. Defenders Gayla Foster, Jenn Hungate, Erika Saffer and Lyndsey Winters have joined with captains Bridgette Adorno and Kerri Luyties to help the Cajuns to six shutouts on the season. The six shutouts ties for the most in school history.
