Fouls Cost Cajuns in Loss to North Texas

9/24/2006 9:00:00 PM | Soccer

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team's aggressive style of play got the better of them as they fell 2-0 to North Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.

The Cajuns (3-5-2, 0-2-0 Sun Belt) entered the 2006 season with a goal to be more aggressive on the field.  That aggressive style came back to bite UL in their loss to the Mean Green.

Louisiana committed 23 fouls on the afternoon including a very costly foul that led directly to the match winning goal for North Texas.

North Texas scored their first goal of the afternoon on a free kick after a Ragin' Cajuns' foul in the 61st minute of the match.  After the whistle, Heather Huytra lined up the free kick and put the ball in the upper right corner of the net for what would be the deciding goal of the match.

“I think mentally we were let down,” senior captain Meghan Crawford said of the loss.  “We played so well against them the first half and then in the first couple of minutes of the second half they scored on us.”

The Mean Green added an insurance goal later in the second half, as Kelli Lunsford scored off of a deflection.

The Ragin' Cajuns could not counter the Mean Green attack despite a valiant effort.  After playing North Texas even in the first half, the Cajuns were out shot in the second half 13-to-4.

“I think after they got that second goal, it took a lot of wind out of our sails,” assistant coach Jen Gardner commented.  “It opened up more opportunities for them.”

The loss overshadowed the performance of goalkeeper Stephanie Weston.  She recorded five saves on the afternoon including a pair of acrobatic stops.

With her five saves, Weston moves into sole possession of second place in the Cajuns career saves list.  She now has 146 for her career, passing Anne Corbello.

The Cajuns entered halftime in a scoreless tie with the Mean Green.

The two teams were nearly identical in the first half of play.  Both teams were even with five shots apiece and the two teams made their shots count.  NT took four shots on goal compared to three shots on goal by UL.  Each team took only one corner kick in the half.

The loss drops UL to 0-8-0 all-time against the Mean Green and 0-4-0 against NT at home.  North Texas held the Cajuns scoreless for the fourth time in the series history.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Friday, Sept. 29 as they travel to Little Rock, Ark., to take on the Trojans of UALR.  Friday night's match is slated for 7 p.m.  The Cajuns will continue their trek through Arkansas on Sunday, Oct. 1, as they head to Jonesboro to face Arkansas State at 1 p.m.
