Hunter Moody had a career high 12 strikeouts on the night
LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team broke their two game losing skid behind the arm of sophomore pitcher Hunter Moody. The Cajuns held the Golden Gophers scoreless to win 2-0 on Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Moody fell just two outs short of his second complete game of the season as he led the Cajuns to a shutout victory over Minnesota. The southpaw recorded a career high 12 strikeouts on the night while walking only one batter.
Moody only allowed four hits on the evening, and did not allow an extra base hit in the game. The Cajuns pitcher only allowed one batter past first base the entire evening. He threw 128 pitches on the night. Nearly 75-percent of Moody's pitches (94) were strikes.
Chad Beck entered the game in the top of the ninth inning in relief. The junior hurler gave up no runs on no hits to complete the shutout. The reliever picked up his first save of the 2006 season. The save was also the first for the Cajuns this season.
Offensively, the Cajuns only managed five hits on the night but with Moody on the mound, it proved to be enough.
Redshirt freshman Blaine LaFleur started the first game of his career at UL and made it a good one. LaFleur scored both of the Cajuns runs and hit his first collegiate homerun.
Jameson Parker rebounded from an 0-for-5 against McNeese State on Tuesday. The senior had a pair of hits on the night and drove in what would be the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
Freshman Grant Derouen also had a pair of hits on the night.
In the third inning, LaFleur drew a base on balls to give the Cajuns their first base runner of the night. Grant Derouen dropped a single into right centerfield for UL's first hit of the game. John McCarthy loaded the bases as he drew a four-pitch walk. The Ragin' Cajuns scored their first run as Parker hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, LaFleur collected his first collegiate to extend the Cajuns lead to 2-0. The redshirt freshman lifted a ball over the leftfield fence for his first collegiate homerun.
The Cajuns failed to score in the remaining innings, but used solid pitching and defense to keep the Golden Gophers from scratching the scoreboard.
The win by the Cajuns broke a six-game winnings streak by Minnesota. The Gophers' last loss was 4-1 loss to No. 4 Nebraska in the Dairy Queen Classic on March 5.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Golden Gophers will continue the three-game series at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday at the Tigue. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday in a game that was rescheduled for 10:30 a.m.
