LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns had little trouble with a depleted New Orleans Privateers squad on Thursday, topping UNO 65-51 here at Earl K. Long Gym.
Louisiana (17-8, 7-6) trailed New Orleans (3-22, 1-12) for the game's first 1:14, but it was all Cajuns from there.
The Cajuns opened the second half with two baskets from Yolanda Jones and one from Alicia McDaniel to extend their lead to 39-23 only 2:27 into the second stanza.
An overwhelming edge on the boards helped Louisiana take control of the game. UL had a six-rebound edge at the half, but that number jumped to 16 just eight minutes into the second half.
Leading 42-27, the Cajuns outscored UNO 10-3 over a four-minute span to build a 22-point advantage midway through the half. Baskets by Jones, Sonora Edwards and Jeanenne Colbert's third three-pointer, coupled with a trio of points from the charity stripe helped Louisiana open it up.
The Cajuns lead remained at 22 points, 57-35, with 5:56 to play.
A lackadaisical effort by the hosts over the final six minutes helped UNO trim the final score.
Jones led the Cajuns with 25 points and 19 rebounds. Colbert added 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal, playing all 40 minutes. Onna Charles was the third Cajun in double-figures, with 13 points.
Cookie Johnson and Le'Della English led UNO with 19 and 17 points, respectively.
The Cajuns fought off a sluggish start with a pair of three-pointers to spark an 8-0 run. Colbert and Charles connected on triples before Jones' finger-roll boosted UL's one-point lead to nine, 13-4, with 11:28 to play in the opening half.
UNO cut into their deficit with five unanswered points, but the Cajuns reacted with an 8-2 run to extend their lead to double figures, 21-11. Triples from Charles and Jones, and a baseline jumper by Charles led to the scoring bevy.
A three-point play by Jones and Colbert's second triple pushed Louisiana's lead to 29-16 with 3:27 left in the opener.
The Cajuns lead slipped in the final minutes, but UL still held a 10-point lead at the half.
