Scouting the field…
Louisiana-Lafayette
The Cajuns will continue their eight-match homestand
this weekend. UL has already played three matches at home
and are currently 1-1-1 at home on the season. The Ragin
Cajuns are currently 1-2-1 overall on the season. Taunya Geelhoed leads the team with two goals on the season, half
of the Cajuns total for the year. UL's defense has played
well at home this season and has allowed only two goals
(only one in regulation play) in nearly 300 minutes of play
on its home turf.
McNeese State
The Cowgirls enter the weekend with a 2-2-0 record
overall. McNeese opened the season 0-2, but since have
earned wins against Austin Peay, 3-1, and Southern, 9-2.
Audrey Smith leads the Cowgirls with three goals, while
Cynthia Torres has two goals on the year. MSU will return to
Lafayette the following as the Cowgirls and Cajuns meet in a
regular season match on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Cajuns
Track/Soccer Facility.
Oklahoma State
OSU arrives at the tournament with a 3-0-2 record on the
season and will be making its first appearance in
Lafayette. The Cajuns traveled to Stillwater, Okla., in the
2002 and 2004 seasons and OSU is now returning the visit.
The Cowgirls opened the season with a three-match winning
streak and are currently on a five-match unbeaten streak.
In their last match, Oklahoma State went on the road against
#25 Wisconsin and fought for 110-minutes to earn a 1-1 tie
in double overtime. The Cowgirls are presently averaging
nearly four goals a game, scoring 19 goals in just five
contests.
Wisconsin-Green Bay
The Phoenix enters the tournament this weekend with a
1-3-0 record on the season. UWGB dropped a match to #20
Marquette, 1-0, before heading to the Ragin' Cajun Classic.
The UWGB is led by junior Stephanie Gross and sophomore
Lotte Rasmussen who both have two goals apiece on the
season. Rasmussen will be a familiar face to Ragin' Cajuns
fans and team members – the Denmark native was a member of
the 2004 UL women's soccer team and led the squad with six
goals. Rasmussen, a 2004 All-Sun Belt Conference second team
selection, elected to transfer following the 2005 spring
semester.
Kicking Back Against Katrina
Louisiana-Lafayette, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin-Green
Bay women's soccer teams will be participating in community
service activities on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. until
12 Noon.
The Cowgirls and Cajuns will be helping out at Foodnet – The Greater Acadiana Food Bank – while Wisconsin-Green Bay will be volunteering at the Salvation Army. The teams will carry supplies, goods and necessities to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
OSU will be at Foodnet on North University Avenue, while the Cajuns will be at the East Amedee Drive location. UWGB will be situated at the Salvation Army located on Sixth (6th) Street.
