LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season and for first year head coach Scot Wieland as the squad defeated Northwestern State, 1-0, at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. With the win, the Cajuns improve to 1-1-1 on the season while the Demons fall to 2-1-0.
Taunya Geelhoed scored the match-winning goal for the Cajuns. Geelhoed, a sophomore from Mission, British Columbia, Canada took a pass from Callie Oliver and put it just out of reach of NSU's goalkeeper Krystle Donaldson.
The goal was Geelhoed's second of the year. Her first goal of the season came against Southern Mississippi in the Cajuns' season opener.
The win marked the first of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns, but it also is the first Division I win for first year head coach Scot Wieland.
“It's a great feeling,” Wieland said of his first win. “I am so proud of these girls because they worked unbelievably hard. In our last match, we went into the locker room with the same situation leading 1-0. It's a great feeling when a team works hard and they get the result you want. I am just very happy for them. Their hard work paid off.”
UL returns to the field on Sunday, Sept. 4 to host in-state rival Louisiana State. The match, originally scheduled to be played in Baton Rouge, was moved due to the after effects of Hurricane Katrina. The match is slated to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
