LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team fell to 1-3-2 on the season as they dropped a 5-0 decision to Oklahoma State here Sunday afternoon at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the Cajuns finished the 2005 Ragin' Cajuns Shootout 0-1-1. OSU finished 2-0 and was crowned tournament champions.
Sophomore Taunya Geelhoed had one of three UL shots, and recorded the only shot on goal for the Ragin' Cajuns. Junior Ainsley Breaux and sophomore Erin Thompson both recorded one shot a piece.
Defensively for the Cajuns, starting goalkeeper Stephanie Weston had an uncharacteristic outing at the net. The freshman from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, allowed five goals while only saving five shots. Entering the match, Weston had only allowed eight goals on 40 shots on goal in five previous matches, with one shutout.
Junior goalkeeper Anna Brannon entered the match for the Cajuns in relief of Weston and was effective, recording three saves in 24:30 of play.
OSU led only 1-0 through the first 30 minutes of the match. A flurry of goals over the next 26 minutes helped the visitors pull away. The Cowgirls led 3-0 at the break and then scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
The match marked the third time in school history that the Cajuns squared off against the Cowgirls. OSU is now 3-0 in the series.
The Ragin' Cajuns will face in-state rival McNeese State on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The match will mark the sixth consecutive match for the Ragin' Cajuns at home. UL leads the all-time series against the Cowgirls, 1-0-1, winning the last match in Lake Charles, La., 4-1, in 2004.
