Teams Put Soccer
Aside to Help Out
Louisiana-Lafayette, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin-Green Bay
volunteered to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina
Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005
LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team stepped off of the field to lend a helping hand to those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Oklahoma State and Wisconsin-Green Bay also took a break from the soccer field to help out with the relief efforts.
The teams were at two locations providing aid by volunteering. UL and OSU went to the Acadiana Foodnet Distribution Center to pack boxes of food for families and distribute it to those in need. UWGB helped sort and fold clothes for those in need at the Salvation Army.
“I think it is an amazing thing to have these teams coming out here,” UL head coach Scot Wieland stated. “The thought of [volunteering] this morning was put before any of the matches this weekend. The first thing the coaches asked before we even talked about the matches was, 'what can we do to help the hurricane victims?'
“You can see these teams are working together and they are not thinking about soccer,” Wieland added. “You have different teams working together that didn't know each other before, that are here as one group helping to do whatever they can. No one is thinking about soccer. It is just compassion; helping those who need it.”
The teams are set to complete competition in the Ragin' Cajuns Shootout Sunday, Sept. 11. The matches start at 11 a.m. when McNeese State will square off against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Immediately following the match, the Ragin' Cajuns are set to face Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
