Cajuns Take 9-5
Win Behind Ardoin's Strong Seven-Inning Performance
Friday, April 29, 2005
Louisiana-Lafayette (37-8, 10-3 Sun Belt) starting pitcher Kevin Ardoin (9-1) allowed five runs on eight hits while walking one with nine strikeouts. With his strikeout of Tim Lawrence in the second inning, Ardoin became the third pitcher in school history to eclipse 300 career strikeouts. Ardoin now has 306 career Ks and needs just three more to move into second place all-time (Andy Gros, 308). Arkansas-Little Rock (18-26, 5-10 Sun Belt) starting pitcher Bennett Cromer (4-6) lost for the third time in his last four Sun Belt starts. Cromer allowed eight runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts over seven innings. Louisiana-Lafayette scored a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. With two out in the second, Micah Cockrell doubled to right center field, which advanced Phillip Hawke to third. John Coker's infield RBI single scored Hawke to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead. Cockrell later scored on a fielding error by UALR shortstop Derek Eilers giving the Cajuns a two-run advantage. With one out in the third, freshman designated hitter Jonathan Lucroy continued his hot streak, doubling to left field. Morris singled up the middle, scoring Lucroy to increase the Cajuns' lead to three runs, 3-0. Hawke's double down the right field line advanced Morris to third. Jameson Parker's sacrifice fly later plated Morris to give the Cajuns a four-run advantage. Ardoin retired the Arkansas-Little Rock side in order for the first three innings, taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning. However, the Trojans bats came alive in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on four hits in the frame. After Eilers flied out to John McCarthy in right field, Chad McKellar broke up Ardoin's no-hit bid with an infield single. Tommy Bryant then doubled down the left field line, advancing McKellar to third. Steve Bilokur followed with a two-RBI single up the middle, cutting the Cajuns' lead to two runs, 4-2. Ardoin settled down, retiring the last two batters to get out of the inning. The Cajuns answered with another run in the fourth, increasing their lead back to three runs, 5-2. Cockrell led off with a triple to deep center field. Cockrell later scored on Josh Landry's ground out to UALR second baseman Eric Bowman. Arkansas-Little Rock scored a run in the fifth inning, to cut the Cajuns lead back to two runs, 5-3. Josh Ward's lead-off solo home run to right field gave the Trojans their only run of the inning. McCarthy's two-out two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Cajuns a 7-3 advantage. The Cajuns took advantage two costly Trojans fielding errors. In the seventh, Morris launched his team-leading eighth home run of the season to give the Cajuns a five-run advantage, 8-3. Arkansas-Little Rock scored two runs in the eighth to keep the Cajuns to a three-run lead, 8-5. Bryant led off with a single to center field. Bilokur then plated Bryant with an RBI double to left field. Kraig Schambough then replaced Ardoin with a runner on with nobody out. After Bilokur advanced to third on a passed ball, Jacob Stover reached on a fielding error by Parker which allowed Bilokur to score for the Trojans' second run of the inning. Schambough struck out four batters in two innings of relief. McCarthy's sacrifice fly to right field in the eighth inning scored Coker to give the Cajuns a 9-5 lead. Cockrell finished a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Morris went 3-for-5 with a home run and a pair of RBI, while McCarthy drove in three runs. Bilokur led the Trojans offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Bryant went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns will continue its three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday with a 2:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch. Louisiana-Lafayette's Austin Faught (8-0, 2.55 ERA) will get the start against UALR's Nick Enlow (3-7, 5.01 ERA). Saturday's game will be televised on KLAF-TV Channel 17 in the Lafayette area.
