Freshman Sawyer Pruitt fires a pitch during his six-inning performance on Saturday against Texas State in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championships

Deja Vu! Louisiana Sweeps Texas State To Advance to SBC Title Game

5/23/2026 11:43:00 PM | Baseball

Louisiana to face Southern Miss-Troy winner for SBC crown at 1 p.m.

TROY, Ala. – Exactly 11 years to the day, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team saw itself in the same situation and in the same venue.

Needing two wins over Texas State on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field to reach the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship Game for the first time in three years, Louisiana got 6.0 strong innings on the mound from freshman Sawyer Pruitt.

Maddox Mandino and Donovan LaSalle each continued their stellar postseasons with a pair of hits while senior Lee Amedee delivered the big blow for the Ragin' Cajuns with a three-run homer in the ninth inning in a 7-4 win over the Bobcats in an elimination game.

Louisiana (39-22) advanced to the SBC Championship Game for the third time in the past five seasons, and first since 2023, by doing the same thing, and on the same field, it did in 2015: beat Texas State twice.

The Ragin' Cajuns will await the winner of top-seeded Southern Miss and fourth-seeded Troy in the SBC Championship Game, scheduled for DABOS Park in Montgomery. USM and Troy will meet on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing to face Louisiana for the right to claim the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Baseball Regionals.

Following a 12-6 win earlier in the day, the Ragin' Cajuns scored three times in the fourth inning of the nightcap as Mark Collins broke a scoreless contest with an RBI single before Donovan LaSalle laced a two-run single to left off Texas State starter Jesus Tovar (9-3).

The Bobcats, who will join the revised Pac-12 Conference in July, cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on Manny Salas' solo homer to center, but Louisiana answered with a run in the sixth as LaSalle drove in Collins with an RBI single.

Pruitt (7-4), making his first start since April 10 against Southern Miss, struck out eight batters and allowed five hits before giving way to freshman Hayden Pearson in the seventh. Ty Roman, who tossed 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts in an eventual 4-3 walk-off loss to Texas State (36-24), struck out four over the final 2.0 innings to earn his first save of the season.

Texas State closed to within 4-2 in the sixth when Salas doubled and scored on a wild pitch, but Pruitt fanned eventual tying run Jackson Cotton to end the inning.

Louisiana, which blew a 3-0 lead after eight innings in Thursday's loss to the Bobcats, broke the game open in the ninth with a two-out rally. Blaze Rodriguez started the rally with a single through the right side and advanced to second when Noah Lewis was hit by a pitch.

After Texas State brought in reliever Kyle Froelich, Amedee fouled off three pitches before launching his sixth home run of the season – a 399-foot shot over the right field wall – to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 7-2 lead.

Roman opened the ninth by fanning Clayton Namken before allowing a base hit to Cotton and a two-run homer to Justin Vossos. The Bobcats added a pair of base runners on a walk and a base hit, but Roman fanned Chase Mora on a called third strike before eventually fanning Rashawn Galloway to seal the win.

LaSalle and Maddox Mandino each recorded two hits apiece to lead Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns finished with eight hits – the first six coming from the bottom four hitters in the lineup – before Rodriguez and Amedee picked up their hits in the ninth.

Salas and Brady Boles added three hits each for Texas State. Tovar allowed four runs and struck out four in 5.1 innings of work.
