DENTON,
Texas – No. 7 Louisiana-Lafayette extended its clean
slate in Sun Belt Conference softball action to nine
games with a 3-0, 3-1 doubleheader sweep of North Texas
here Saturday afternoon at Denia Park.
UL Lafayette snapped a two-game losing streak in the process and swept its ninth doubleheader of the season.
The Cajuns (43-6, 9-0 Sun Belt) received RBI hits from Brittany Bryant and Lacey Bertucci in the top of the sixth to break up a 1-1 tie in the second game and help complete the sweep of the Mean Green (16-48, 1-9 Sun Belt).
Earlier in the day, Louisiana-Lafayette took advantage of two Mean Green errors in the second inning of game one and received another strong pitching effort from Holly Tankersley to take a 3-0 win and snap its brief two-game losing streak.
In the nightcap, North Texas took the lead first by scoring on a misplayed relay throw from the outfield in the third inning.
Mean Green starter Raci Burnett held the powerful Cajuns offense in check through the first three innings, allowing no hits.
Ashley Evans started the Cajuns comeback with a loud bang in the top of the fourth inning. The West Monroe native drilled a home run shot over the left center field wall that gave the Cajuns their first hit off of Burnett, but more importantly tied the game 1-1.
For Evans, it was the sophomore utility player's sixth home run of the season and the Cajuns 66th as a team.
Louisiana-Lafayette broke through in the sixth inning to chase Burnett from the contest and score the winning runs.
Danyele Gomez rifled a double deep into the left center field gap with Evans on deck. NT interim head coach Angie Scharnhorst chose to relieve Burnett seeing that Evans had take one out of the park in her previous at bat.
Designated player Katie Maxey was brought in to the circle and got Evans to foul out for the first out. Bryant then greeted the right-handed freshman with a bloop single into the gap in left field that allowed Gomez to motor around for the eventual game-winning run and a 2-1 lead.
Two batters later, Bertucci gave UL Lafayette an insurance run when she drove a single through the right side past NT second baseman Nicole Rodriguez that scored Bryant to make it 3-1.
Heather Bobbitt picked up the win for the Cajuns tossing 5 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Tankersley collected her first career save after relieving Bobbitt with two outs in the sixth with runners of second and third base.
In game one, the Cajuns took advantage of two Mean Green errors, both with two outs, in the second inning to take the early lead.
Desi Chatman drew a two-out walk and Joy Webre dumped a single into left field to give Louisiana-Lafayette runners on first and second.
Crystal George hit a routine grounder to shortstop, but NT's Brittiny Chapman overthrew Nicole Rodriguez at second trying to force out Webre, allowing Chatman to score.
On the next at bat, Hillary Guidry hit a grounder to Chapman whose throw to Heather Bostic at first base was dropped allowing Guidry to reach and Webre to score the Cajuns second run of the inning.
UL Lafayette added another run for good measure in the sixth when Chatman laced an RBI double into left field that scored Lacey Bertucci.
Tankersley picked up her second win of the week, tossing seven innings of shutout softball.
The Kirbyville, Texas, native held NT to two hits and struck out four. She carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowed two of the three hits in the seventh.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game Sun Belt series in a noon doubleheader Sunday.
