DENTON, Texas - Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns softball team remained
unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play and completed a
four-game sweep of North Texas with a 1-0, 9-3
doubleheader sweep here Sunday afternoon at Denia
Park.
The Cajuns offense, held in check through the first
three games of the
series, exploded for nine runs off of 10 hits in the
second game to
improve its Sun Belt record to 11-0.
A four-spot in the third inning helped
Louisiana-Lafayette erase a 1-0,
first-inning deficit. UL Lafayette added five more
runs over the next
three innings to pull away.
Holly Tankersley, who relieved Bobbitt in the first
inning after the
Mean Green scored an unearned run, worked 4 1/3
innings to record her
second win of the day. The Kirbyville, Texas, native
struck out three
and surrendered just one run.
Earlier in the day, Tankersley tossed a complete game
and picked up the game-winning hit in the sixth inning
as the seventh-ranked Cajuns (45-6, 11-0 Sun Belt)
took a 1-0 victory.
Hillary Guidry led off the sixth being hit by a pitch
from NT starter
Katy Maxey. She then stole second to set the stage for
Tankersley's
game-clinching RBI.
Tankersley drove a double into the left center field
gap to score Guidry
for the lone run of the contest.
Tankersley then worked out of a second-and-third jam
with one out in the
sixth to preserve the lead and secure her fifth win of
the season.
With the sweep, Louisiana-Lafayette extended its win
streak to four
games and saw its Sun Belt win streak climb to 14
dating back to last
season.
In the series finale, back-to-back one-out singles in
the first scored
the Mean Green's first run of the contest. After an
infield single by
Susan Waters loaded the bases, Bobbitt was relieved by
Tankersley.
After getting shutout in the second inning, UL
Lafayette took advantage
of what the NT defense allowed in the third inning to
strike for four
runs.
Joy Webre punched a one-out single into left field and
Leslie Pierce
drew a walk. Hillary Guidry then hit a grounder to
second base and Ana
Vega's throw went wild allowing Guidry to reach safely
and Webre to
score to tie the game 1-1.
Christine Collins, who pinch ran for Pierce and moved
to third on
Guidry's grounder, scored the go-ahead run when she
slid under NT
catcher Christine Jonse after she dropped the throw
from Vega.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Danyele Gomez and an
RBI single from
Ashley Evans scored the Cajuns final two runs of the
inning.
Brittany Bryant hit her seventh home run of the season
in the fifth to
extend the Cajuns margin to 7-1.
NT ended the Cajuns string of 70 consecutive innings
without an earned
run allowed in Sun Belt play in the bottom of the
fifth. Walker led off
the inning with a triple to center field and was
brought home on an RBI
single by Stephanie Cranmer.
Evans picked up her second hit of the contest and gave
the Cajuns more
breathing room when she laced a two-RBI double into
right center field
that scored two more and gave the Cajuns a 9-2 lead.
The Mean Green added an unearned run in the seventh
after a back-to-back singles and a passed ball put
Walker on third base. A sacrifice fly by Maureen
Kelley scored the Mean Green's final run of the game.
Louisiana-Lafayette returns to action next weekend as
the Ragin' Cajuns
host Western Kentucky Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2 in a
pair of 1 p.m.
doubleheaders at Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.
