Cajuns
Solid - Top USF 4-1
Louisiana-Lafayette 2-0 in Rainbow
Baseball Tournament
Wednesday, March 2, 2005
HONOLULU
- No. 21 Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns remain unbeaten after topping South Florida 4-1 on
Wednesday in the second day of the Rainbow Baseball
Tournament.
Louisiana
(12-0) had 10 hits, marking the ninth time that the Cajuns
have accumulated double figures in hits.
It was a
game of missed opportunities on both sides as UL left eight
runners on base, while USF (9-6) stranded nine runners.
The Cajuns
collected three hits in the bottom of the first to quickly
build a 3-0 lead. Josh Landry singled and was moved to
second on a walk to Justin Merendino. Both runners scored
on a double by Phillip Hawke. Hawke was plated by a John McCarthy single up the middle.
UL added a
two-out run in the second. Jameson Parker singled and
advanced to second on an infield single by John Coker.
Parker then scored after a wild pitch and a throwing error
by the catcher.
The quick
4-0 cushion was all that starter Kevin Ardoin (4-0) would
need. Ardoin scattered five hits in six and two-thirds of
work.
Ardoin
nearly wiggled out of a two-on, no-out situation in the top
of the third. He came back to strike out the next two
batters, but then surrendered a run scoring single to Jeff
Baisley.
The Cajuns
loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh,
but couldn't add any more runs. Merendino popped out, while
Hawke flied out to end the inning.
Louisiana
put two runners on with one out in the eighth, but Jamison
Parker grounded out and Adam Massiatte flied out to end the
threat.
Micah Cockrell relieved Ardoin and earned his first save of the
season. Cockrell was perfect, retiring all seven batters
which he faced.
The Cajuns
will face Sacramento State on Thursday at 2:30pm (CT).
