Hall Named Co-Coach of the Year, Petrakova Named First Team Again

Tuesday, March 2, 2005

LAFAYETTE – Not only has Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball head coach J. Kelley Hall won the first conference regular season championship in school history, but he can now add another piece of hardware as he was named the Sun Belt Conference Co-Coach of the Year, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Senior Anna Petrakova, last season's Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and teammate Ashley Blanche was named All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention.

Petrakova's first team selection marks the second consecutive first team All-Sun Belt selection for the Cajuns. Blanche's honorable mention selection gives the Cajuns three all-conference selections under coach Hall.

Petrakova also becomes the seventh player in school history to receive back-to-back all-conference honors. Former Ragin' Cajuns great Kim Perrot was the last Cajuns player to accomplish the feat as a four-time all-conference selection (1987 Southland, 1988-90 American South).

This season, Petrakova became the school's all-time blocked shots leader and will finish her career as the fourth all-time scorer and second all-time rebounder in Louisiana-Lafayette history. Blanche, a junior from New Orleans, is 12 assists shy of moving into fourth place on the school's all-time list, while having the sixth-best single-season assist total (136) in school history.

Hall, in just his third season, became the school's second all-time winningest coach with 41 wins. Hall led the Cajuns to a 20-8 overall record – just their second 20-win season in school history – and their first regular season conference championship of any kind in school history. On Saturday, the Cajuns won the Sun Belt Western Division championship.

“I am extremely proud of everything we have accomplished this season,” Hall said. “We've worked hard all year long and nobody thought we could win a championship this soon. I think that says a lot about the players on our team.

Anna Petrakova and Ashley Blanche both deserved their All-Sun Belt honors. They have been vital to our success this season.”
