Robichaux Gets 600th Career Victory with Cajuns' 4-0 Triumph
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns improved to 6-0 and head coach Tony Robichaux won his 600th career game with a 4-0 victory here Sunday evening in the final game of the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational.
Robichaux became the 48th active NCAA Division I head coach to reach 600 career victories and the fourth current Sun Belt Conference coach to reach the milestone. Florida International's Danny Price, South Alabama's Steve Kittrell and Western Kentucky's Joel Murrie are the other three Sun Belt head coaches to have reached the milestone.
Louisiana-Lafayette (6-0) was held to just two hits in the first five innings. In the first inning, John Coker hit a lead-off double down the left field line. Coker was later thrown out at home on a Justin Merendino fielder's choice. In the second inning, senior catcher Adam Massiatte sent a single up the middle, scoring John McCarthy, to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead.
UL Lafayette starting pitcher Austin Faught (2-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but Northwestern State's Scott Pittenger broke up the no-hit bid with a double down the left field line. Faught went eight complete innings, striking out six batters and giving up just two hits.
Northwestern State (3-4) starting pitcher Dwayne Hall (0-2) gets the loss, going just 1 1/3 innings. Hall gave up one run on one hit, while walking three batters.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Brooks Wallace Award candidate Dallas Morris hit his first home run of the season – a solo shot over the left field fence – giving the Cajuns a 2-0 advantage.
The Demons only serious scoring threat came in the seventh inning. Brandon Morgan led off with a single and then advanced to second on a throwing error by Morris. Morgan advanced to third on a wild pitch. Faught then retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.
The Cajuns added two more runs in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 4-0
Seven Cajuns players were named to the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational All-Tournament team. Faught and Friday night starting pitcher Kevin Ardoin were named to the team as pitchers. Massiatte, Hawke, Micah Cockrell, McCarthy and Jefferies Tatford were also named to the All-Tournament team. Faught was named the Most Outstanding Player after his eight-inning shutout performance Sunday.
Northwestern State's Derek Cloeren was named to the All-Tournament team, as well as Jim Martin from St. John's and Southern's Gene Filyaw and Kellen Clark.
Massiatte paced the Cajuns at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Morris, Merendino and Coker each had a hit for the Cajuns.
Louisiana-Lafayette will try to extend its six-game winning streak when it returns to action Tuesday to host Nicholls State at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
