Offense Shines as Cajuns Dominate Troy; Snap Winless Streak
Meredith Smith and Bridgette Adorno both registered goals as UL downs Troy, 2-1.

Friday, Oct. 20, 2005

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team kept their postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Troy on Friday. The win snapped a five-match winless streak for the Cajuns.

The Cajuns, now 4-7-3 on the season, are 2-4-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.

With the win, the Cajuns saw their SBC tournament hopes stay alive. UL now is tied with Arkansas State, Troy and Middle Tennessee with two wins a piece in conference play, with the Cajuns wins coming over ASU and Troy.

The Cajuns used a senior tandem to score the first goal of the match.

Senior midfielder Meredith Smith took a pass from fellow senior Ainsley Breaux to put the Cajuns on the board early in the first half.

The goal was the fourth in Smith's career. The assist was the first of the season for Breaux and the fifth of her career. Her five goals move her into sole possession of fourth place on the Cajuns all-time assists list.

“It is indescribable,” Smith said of scoring off of pass received from fellow captain Breaux. “I wouldn't have wanted it from anyone else except for Ainsley.”

The Cajuns second goal of the night came with just under 13 minutes to play in the match. Sophomore midfielder Bridgette Adorno took a pass from freshman defender Jennifer Hungate and put it in the back of the net. The goal was the first of the year for Adorno and the third in her career. For Hungate, that was the first helper of her career.

The Cajuns found their offense in the match, recording 26 shots, with 17 shots on goal. The 26 shots is tied for fourth in the UL annals for most shots in a match, while the 17 shots on goal ties for the most shots ever in a match. The only other match where the Cajuns posted 17 shots on goal was a 3-3 double overtime tie against Louisiana-Monroe in 2002.

“My assistant [Trevor Wiley] and I are extremely happy for the team because their hard work finally paid off,” head coach Scot Wieland said of the match. “We have been working so hard lately and we just haven't been getting the results. We needed this, not only for their moral but for the conference tournament. It was a big win for us. We needed it.

“That's all we worked on this week a practice,” Wieland added of the offense. “We didn't work on defending; we didn't work on possessing the ball. We worked on attacking. We did it from Tuesday until yesterday. We worked on getting into the box, taking on people one-on-one and scoring. It was definitely noticeable tonight and I couldn't be prouder of our team for the way they played tonight.”

The two goals in the match marks only the second time this season the Cajuns have scored more than one goal. The Cajuns have not scored more than one goal since the season opener when UL dropped a 5-2 decision to Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg

Defensively for the Cajuns, freshman goalie Stephanie Weston recorded just four saves while allowing one goal. The Cajuns were effective at keeping the Trojans away from the net and limited Troy to just seven shots with only five shots on goal.

The Cajuns will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 when UL will host Sun Belt opponent South Alabama. Sunday's match will be the last home contest for the Cajuns and will serve as Senior Day. Rachel Rozelle will join Breaux and Smith as the Ragin' Cajuns honor their 2005 seniors.

“It just all went by way too fast,” Smith exclaimed of her time at UL. “When you are in season, it goes by slow, but looking back it went by like yesterday.”
