Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.-The Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team struggled to find any offense as Louisiana-Lafayette was shutout 2-0 by conference foe Arkansas-Little Rock. With the loss, the Cajuns fall to 3-4-2 on the season and 1-1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Ragin' Cajuns came out flat in the first half offensively, managing only one shot in 45 minutes. UL regrouped at halftime and was more aggressive in the second half recording 12 shots in the frame. However, UALR kept the Cajuns out of the goal and preserved the shutout.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Weston took the loss for the Cajuns. Weston, who had two consecutive shutouts entering the match, allowed two goals, the second most allowed by the goalie all season.
Defensively, UL rebounded in the second half keeping the Trojans out of the goal. The Cajuns limited the Trojans to just two shots in the second half, with only one shot on goal.
“It was an uncharacteristically bad first half for us,” head coach Scot Wieland commented. “I thought we did a good job in the second half, however, you cannot just play one solid half of soccer at the college level and expect to win.”
For Arkansas-Little Rock, Maria Ferrato scored both Trojan goals. Cindy Jenkins was credited with two assists, while Stacie Julian had one assist.
The match was a physical contest as two the squads combined for 28 total fouls and five yellow cards.
“They are a physical team,” Wieland added. “That's how they scored in the first half. They just out-worked us physically.
“We just have to get this one out of our minds and prepare and work hard for the next one,” Wieland stressed. “We have two conference matches at home this weekend and we just have to work hard and be ready to play this weekend.”
The Ragin' Cajuns will return home to the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility to host North Texas and Denver next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 7, the Cajuns will kickoff their home conference schedule as UL will face North Texas at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, the Cajuns will continue SBC play hosting Denver in a match scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
