NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team will conclude its four game road stand here Sunday afternoon when they face Tulane University in a 1 p.m. match at the Westfeldt Facility.
The Cajuns are 0-3 against the Green Wave and are hoping that they can build on some of their recent successes.
On Friday, UL Lafayette (1-1-1) recorded their first win of the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over McNeese State in Lake Charles.
Three Cajuns scored their first career collegiate goals Friday night, including sophomore and Greenwood Village, Colo., native Colleen Henry who ended the Cajuns' scoreless streak in the sixth minute.
Henry opened the scoring with a perfectly timed run into the box and got on the end of a centering pass from freshman forward Lotte Rasmussen.
“The two of them have been working on this all preseason. It was nice to see them rewarded for their work”, UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said.
Other goal scorers for the Cajuns were Rasmussen, sophomore forward Kelli Good, and freshman midfielder Bridgette Adorno.
Another freshman, goalkeeper and Victorville, Calif., native Kristen Malen (1-0-1) continued her superb play between the posts for the Cajuns. Malen shut down the Cowgirl attack, holding them to one goal on six shots. Before McNeese State's goal in the 23rd minute, Malen had kept her opponents scoreless for nearly 129 minutes. The Cajuns played 11 freshman, six of them starters, against the Cowgirls.
Tulane, also 1-1-1, suffered its first loss of the season Friday after a 2-1 overtime loss to LSU. The Green Wave are led by Junior goalkeeper Megan Morey, who last week was chosen Conference USA women's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, and senior forward Lindsay Morris.
Louisiana-Lafayette's 2004 Home Opener will be next Friday when they host the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech in the McAlister's Deli South Louisiana Shootout in a 7 p.m. match at Cajun Field. The Cajuns will host Mississippi Valley State Sunday with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
