Cajuns End Scoreless Drought, Trounce Cowgirls 4-1
UL Lafayette's Lotte Rasmussen, Colleen Henry and Bridgette Adorno score first career collegiate goals

Friday, September 3, 2004

LAKE CHARLES Friday afternoon's match between Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns and the McNeese State Cowgirls featured many firsts for the 2004 season. In the end, the only first that mattered was Louisiana-Lafayette's first victory of the season – a 4-1 win over the Cowgirls.

UL Lafayette (1-1-1) entered the match without having scored a goal in the first 200 minutes of the season. Sophomore and Greenwood Village, Colo., native Colleen Henry scored the Cajuns' first goal off a Lotte Rasmussen helper at the 5:59 mark to give the Cajuns an early 1-0 advantage.

"This was a good match for us in that we manufactured some quality goal scoring chances and goals," UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said.

McNeese State (1-2) answered with an Ashley Viscariello goal at the 22:47 mark on a penalty kick – the first penalty kick the Cajuns have seen this season.

The score remained knotted at one until the 45th minute of the first half. Sophomore Kelli Good scored her fourth career goal and second career match-winning goal as a Ragin' Cajun at the 44:16 mark, giving the Cajuns a 2-1 lead at halftime.

"I think the score line was a little flattering, but the result was fair," Poggi added.

"McNeese State was a little unlucky and Kristen was very tidy in goal."

In the 75th minute, redshirt freshman Lotte Rasmussen notched her first career goal off a Henry helper to increase the UL Lafayette lead to 3-1.

Ten minutes later, freshman Bridgette Adorno put home the final goal off a rebound to give the Cajuns the 4-1 victory.

"As a group, I felt we defended well and worked hard on both ends of the field".

Freshman goalkeeper and Victorville, Calif., native Kristen Malen (1-0-1) continued her superb play between the posts for the Cajuns. Malen shut down the Cowgirl attack, holding them to one goal on six shots. Before McNeese State's goal in the 23rd minute, Malen had kept her opponents scoreless for nearly 129 minutes.

"Today I think we saw a glimpse of what we can become, but Sunday will be another challenge."

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to action Sunday when they travel to New Orleans to face Tulane in a 1 p.m. match at the Westfeldt Facility.
