TULSA, Okla. – Katie Ward's overtime goal was the difference as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns 2-1 here Sunday at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Complex.
The loss is the Cajuns' (4-4-1) second in a row, while Tulsa (3-6-1) wins its second straight.
Tulsa got on the board first in the 32nd minute with an unassisted goal from Lauren Gilliland to give the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
"The girls played well," UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said. "We just ran out of gas.
"There weren't very many shots attempted, but Tulsa made the important ones count."
In the 58th minute, UL Lafayette redshirt freshman Lotte Rasmussen redirected a rebound from freshman Kristina Nadolski for the equalizer, tying the match at one apiece. The goal was Rasmussen's third of the season, tying her for the team lead with Rose Clemensen.
The score remained the same heading into overtime. Ward delivered the match-winning score 45 seconds into the extra period.
"It was a good trip for us before conference play," Poggi added. "The matches that really count start Friday."
Louisiana-Lafayette was held to no corner kicks for only the second time this season. The Golden Hurricane attempted five corners.
"We are now shifting our focus to playing well and winning conference matches."
UL Lafayette freshman goalkeeper and Victorville, Calif., native Kristen Malen (4-3-1) faced five Tulsa shots, stopping three.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team returns to action Friday to face South Alabama in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both schools in a 7 p.m. match at the Cage.
