Through the first seven matches of the season, the Cajuns have tallied 51 points, which is just 21 points shy of the school record (72) which was set in 2002 (18 matches). In the 13th minute, freshman midfielder Taunya Geelhoed scored her first career goal off helpers from Sherryl Owens and Mette Olesen to give the Cajuns an early 1-0 advantage. Just over seven minutes later, a handball foul by Nicholls State inside the goalie box gave the Cajuns a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Redshirt freshman Lotte Rasmussen sent home the second Cajuns goal of the half, increasing the home team's lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later, sophomore midfielder and Troy, Ill., native Melissa Barger headed home an Olesen entry pass to give UL Lafayette the 3-0 lead at halftime. “She (found people all over the place,” UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said. “We didn't put some of the opportunities away. “We felt we needed to take advantage of her and our ability in the air.” In the first half, Louisiana-Lafayette's defense held Nicholls State to no shot attempts, while the Cajuns attempted 13 shots, including eight shots on goal. “I was really happy with the first 20 minutes of the match,” Poggi added. “We were really sharp in keeping and moving the ball and penetrating when we had those situations.” At the 54-minute mark, UL Lafayette's Rose Clemensen took advantage of an errant Colonels' throw-in, sending a cross pass which was headed in by freshman and Houston, Texas native Kristina Nadolski to give the Cajuns a 4-0 advantage. Nadolski sent home her second goal of the match in 10 minutes off a Kala Polman-Tuin helper to give the Cajuns the resulting 5-0 decision. “We did some of the things we have been working on in practice,” Poggi said. Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to action Friday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face Big XII Conference member Oklahoma State Cowgirls in a 7 p.m. match at the OSU Soccer Complex. The Cajuns will finish their weekend with a 10 a.m. match at Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 26.
