Hawke's Grand Slam Propels Cajuns Over Harvard

LAFAYETTE-Phillip Hawke's grand slam highlighted the Cajuns14-5 win over The Crimson of Harvard University Saturday afternoon at Moore Field in Lafayette.

Josh Kohrs qualified for the Cajuns' win throwing seven innings giving up two earned runs on eight hits. Kohrs (3-0) fanned six batters as UL Lafayette improved to 13-6 with the showing.

Frank Herrmann took the loss for Harvard surrendering five runs on six hits through one inning of work as Harvard fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Harvard started the top of the first with a Zak Farkes single to the third base side. Farkes stole second an scored when Schuyler Mann snuck a single into right.

Justin Merendino knocked his third homerun of the season over the left field wall to knot the game at one apiece in the bottom of the first.

The next hitter, Josh Landry singled up the middle before Dallas Morris drew a walk on four straight offerings from Herrmann. Phillip Hawke gave the Cajuns the 3-1 lead when he doubled to straightaway center. Herrmann walked Justin Bourque and gave up a bunt single to Jason Rodriguez to load the bases with no outs in the inning. The Harvard hurler would; however, escape the inning with no further damage done as he retired the next three hitters in a row.

The Crimson put runners on first and second with a pair of singles in the second before Rob Wallace put down a sacrifice to move the runners over. Lance Salsgiver was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Kohrs would strand the three on base as he got out of the inning on a routine fly ball to left.

Merendino bunted his way on to lead off the bottom of inning two before a Landry single turned into a fielding error scoring both runners on base. Morris walked and stole second before advancing on a fly out. Morris scored on a Justin Bourque double to left which put the Cajuns up 6-1.

In the top of the third, Trey Hendricks made the contest a 6-2 affair with solo homerun to right.

Merendino singled and stole second with two away in the next frame before Landry and Morris each drew walks to load the bases. Phillip Hawke launched a grand slam over the right field wall bringing the score to 10-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, Salsgiver scored for the Crimson after reaching on an error. He crossed home on a single to the left side off the bat of Hendricks.

Coker was hit by a pitch to reach base before swiping second and third to start the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Leonard Guerrero plated Coker with a single to left. Morris slapped a triple to the center field wall to bring in Guerrero giving the Cajuns a 12-3 lead.

Sport Voorhies walked to open the bottom of the eighth and was pinch run for by Devon Bourque. Ryan Core hit his second homerun of the season to score two more giving the Cajuns a 14-3 advantage.

Harvard added two runs in the top of the ninth on a trio of singles, but it would not be enough as the Cajuns took the contest by a final of 14-5.

The Cajuns will wrap up the weekend set tomorrow as they play Harvard in the afternoon series finale. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
