Hawke Belts Two Homers As Cajuns Roll To 16-5 Win Over Michigan

LAFAYETTE-The Cajuns rode a pair of Phillip Hawke home runs and six RBIs by Dallas Morris to a 16-5 victory over the Michigan Wolverines Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. With the win, Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 12-6 on the season.

Kevin Ardoin accepted the win for Louisiana-Lafayette throwing six and one-thirds innings surrendering four earned runs and striking out seven. Ardoin (3-1) got plenty of run support and didn't walk a batter in his outing.

Jim Brauer (0-2) took the loss for the visiting Wolverines as Michigan fell to 5-7on this outing.

Chris Getz singled up the middle to start things for the Wolverines before advancing two bases on a ground out then a wild pitch. Getz scored on A.J. Schiedt's single to left center, giving Michigan the early 1-0 lead.

The Cajuns would answer with four runs in the bottom of the first when Justin Merendino knocked a bloop that fell just past the Michigan shortstop. Josh Landry reached on a fielding error moving Merendino to second. Morris drove in Merendino when he snuck a single through the first base side. Hawke homered bringing everyone home giving the Cajuns a 4-1 lead.

In his second time at the plate, Hawke turned on a 1-2 pitch and drove it deep to right and gone. Hawke's solo shot was his fourth of the season and second of the game to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 5-1 lead with two outs in the bottom of the second.

Justin Bourque drove a single through the right side before stealing second. Bourque scored on a Jason Rodriguez single to center field. The Cajuns would go into the third frame up 6-1.

Eric Rose hit a triple to the left-center field wall with no one gone in the Michigan half of the third before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfielder.

Merendino reached first when he was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third. Paul Hammond came on in relief of Brauer. Merendino advanced to second on a stolen base before Landry walked to put runners on first and second. Morris was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Merendino crossed home on a wild pitch. Merendino's run gave the Cajuns a 7-2 lead.

Bourque and Rodriguez started the bottom of the fourth with walks. Cockrell advanced the runners on a single that went for an out. Bourque tagged up and scored on a Massiatte sacrifice foul to right. Coker's single to the third base side plated Rodriguez giving the Cajuns a 9-2 lead.

Kunkel hit a solo homerun with two gone in the top of the sixth bringing the score to 9-3.

Coker reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced on a Merendino bunt single. The pair of Cajuns advanced on a passed ball. Morris plated the two with a single and advanced to second on the throw. The two runs gave the home team an 11-3 lead.

The Wolverines added two in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single off the bat of Kyle Bohm.

Brandt Sanders entered the game in the seventh giving up only one hit while striking out a pair over the next two and two-thirds innings.

Cockrell was hit by a pitch to start the seventh and moved over to third on a Coker seeing-eye single up the middle. Merendino plated Cockrell on a bloop that fell in left center giving the Cajuns a 12-5 lead. Coker crossed the plate on a Landry single up the middle. Morris hammered his sixth homerun of the season to bring in the runners and give the Cajuns a 16-5 advantage.

The Cajuns will take on the Crimson of Harvard tomorrow and Sunday. Tomorrow's first pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. with Sunday's game starting at 1:30 p.m.
