Cajun Men Tied For First After Day One at SBC Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The University of Louisiana at Lafayette track and field team completed day one of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track Championships from the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Ragin' Cajun men's team sits atop the standings tied with Western Kentucky at 41 points. The women's team concluded the first day of competition in eighth place with 12 points.
Senior Lawrence Willis led the Cajun men's team by earning 13 points in the long jump and high jump events. Willis earned ten points by winning the long jump title in a leap of 24-07.75 and three more points with a sixth place finish in the men's high jump. Willis will go for his third consecutive triple jump title on Sunday.
Distance runners Walter Whitfield and Moses Rugu combined for 14 points in the 3,000-meter race. Whitfield finished second in a time of 8:45.04 to earn eight points and Rugu earned six more points with a third place finish time of 8:45.52.
Other highlights on the men's side for the Cajuns included a fifth place finish by Greg Hensgens in the shot put, a fourth place finish in the high jump by Jeremy Hebert, and a fourth place finish by the men's distance medley team.
For the women, seniors Natalie Gillis and Amanda Caffey led the team by earning eight of the team's 12 points. Gillis finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:09.38 for five points and Caffey placed sixth in pole vault with a mark of 10-00.00 to earn three points.
The women's distance medley team of Jennifer Gautreaux, Kim Glover, Laura Zaunbrecher, and Analise Zaunbrecher earned the final four points of the afternoon for the Cajuns with a fifth place finish.
The 2004 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships will wrap up Sunday from the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
