Blue Raiders Down Cajuns 2-1
The 2004 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held Nov. 3-6 in Miami at FIU

Sunday, October 31, 2004

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A goal by Middle Tennessee's Debs Brereton 14 seconds into the second half gave the Blue Raiders the insurance they needed to defeat Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns 2-1 here Sunday at the Blue Raider Soccer Field.

The win gave Middle Tennessee (12-4-1, 6-1-1 Sun Belt) at least a share of the Sun Belt regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Miami. Meanwhile, Louisiana-Lafayette (7-9-2, 3-4-1 Sun Belt) could finish as high as fourth in the conference and as low as seventh, depending on Sunday's results.

After a 3-0-1 start in conference play, UL Lafayette has lost four straight. The Cajuns' three conference wins ties a school mark, which is held by the 2001 and 2002 squads.

The Blue Raiders began the scoring in the seventh minute. Laura Miguez scored her fifth goal of the season, while Brereton provided the assist to quickly give MT a 1-0 lead.

UL Lafayette was able to keep within one goal until the 46th minute. Brereton took a Miguez lead pass and put it past Cajuns goalie Anna Brannon to give MT a 2-0 advantage. Sunday's start for Brannon was her first since the season opener.

Freshman midfielder Lyndsey Winters trimmed Middle Tennessee's lead to 2-1 with an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute, but the Cajuns were unable to produce another scoring opportunity in the remaining minutes.

Brannon made a career-high 12 saves, while Blue Raider goalie Jenny Manis stopped six Cajun shots. Middle Tennessee attempted 22 shots to the Cajuns' 14 shots.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns will now prepare for the 2004 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, which will be held November 3-6 in Miami on the campus of Florida International University.
