Cajuns Take South Alabama to the Limit, Finish Knotted 1-1
Friday, October 1, 2004
MOBILE, Ala. – Entering Friday night's match at South Alabama, sophomore midfielder Melissa Barger had scored the only goal in the Cajuns' four previous matches with the Jaguars. Now, Barger has both Cajuns goals, after scoring the equalizer in the 64th minute that sent the match into overtime.
In the end, Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama finished in a 1-1 tie here at the Cage.
UL Lafayette (4-4-2) remains winless against the Jaguars (6-2-1) in the all-time series. The tie also keeps the Cajuns winless in Sun Belt Conference openers.
"It was a very tight match," UL Lafayette head coach Dave Poggi said. "We played the best we've played against a good team."
The teams were scoreless entering halftime. The Jaguars were the first to get on the board in the second half.
In the 57th minute, USA's Kelly Tarrant fired a 10-yard shot off the right post to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The assist came via a Karrie Johnson lead pass.
"Both teams had chances to win," Poggi added. "I think we had maybe a little better of the chances, but the result was fair."
Seven minutes later, it was Barger who tied the match at 1-1 via a Colleen Henry assist. The goal is Barger's third goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead with the Danish duo of Rose Clemensen and Lotte Rasmussen.
"It was a very spirited effort from the entire squad," Poggi continued.
"The next challenge is to put these types of matches away, but I like the progress."
Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Malen (4-3-2) stopped six Jaguar shots in 110 minutes between the posts.
South Alabama fired 16 shots, while UL Lafayette had 10 shots. Six of the Cajuns' shots were on goal.
Each team posted 15 fouls in the contest.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns return to action Thursday, Oct. 7, when they host Oral Roberts at Cajun Field in their final non-conference match of the season. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
