Seven-Run Fifth Carries Shockers Past Cajuns

LAFAYETTE - Louisiana's
Ragin' Cajuns baseball team leaves nine runners stranded
on base in an 11-4 loss to the #19 ranked Wichita State
Shockers. The Shockers improve to 12-2 on the year while
the Cajuns drop to 5-13 overall.
Jason Wilson led off the first inning for the Cajuns
with a walk and advanced to third on a Corey Coles
single through the right side of the infield. The Cajuns
took a 1-0 lead when Wilson scored from third on a throw
from the Wichita State catcher to get Corey Coles in a
pickle between first and second base.
The Cajuns added one more run in the bottom of the
fourth inning against Wichita State starter David
Sanders. Cajun first baseman Rhett Buras led off the
inning with his second homerun of the season to put the
Cajuns up 2-0 after four innings.
Corey Coles held the Shockers in check for the first
four innings until the big seven run fifth inning for
the Shockers. Wichita State scored two runs with one out
on a double by Shocker designated hitter J.R. DiMercurio.
The Shockers scored five more unearned runs after a
Cajun infield error highlighted by a two run homerun by
first baseman Logan Sorensen. The seven run inning gave
the Shockers a 7-2 lead.
Coles (0-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings in the loss giving up
seven runs, of which only two were earned on six hits.
He struck out three and walked one before being replaced
by junior reliever Kraig Schambough with two outs in the
fifth inning.
Both teams added runs in the sixth inning to make the
score 8-3 after six complete. Wichita State added three
more runs in the ninth inning off Schambough to go up
11-3.
UL Lafayette center fielder Jason Wilson hit his second
homerun of the weekend over the left field wall in the
bottom of the ninth to make the final score 11-4.
David Sanders (2-0) picked up the win for Wichita State
after throwing six innings and allowing just three runs
(two earned) on eight hits. Shocker reliever Tommy
Hottovy was credited with the save after entering the
game with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck in
the eighth inning.
Senior Jason Wilson led the Cajuns offensively in the
loss, going 4 for 4 with a homerun and two runs scored.
Shocker first baseman Logan Sorensen drove in three runs
on the night capped by his two-run homerun in the fifth
inning.
UL Lafayette drops to 5-13 on the season and has now
lost six straight games. The Cajuns will try to snap the
six-game skid tomorrow when they host McNeese State in
the final game of the 2003 Mardi Gras Ball. Jordy Templet (1-2, 2.42 ERA) is slated to get the start for
the Cajuns against McNeese State (12-6).
