Offensive Woes Continue In Loss To Texas A&M

HOUSTON- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team concluded play at the 2003 Astros College Classic here at Minute Maid Park with a 12-4 loss to Baylor in the final game of the three-day weekend event for the Cajuns.
For the Cajuns it was their fifth straight loss – the first such losing streak since April 27-May 4, 2001 when the Cajuns were swept in a three-game series by Louisiana Tech and dropped games to UL Monroe and Arkansas-Little Rock. This is the Cajuns worst start under head coach Tony Robichaux and since the 1993 team began 0-7.
Baylor scored first off UL Lafayette starter Austin Faught (0-1) in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Baylor first baseman Jared Clements scoring Chris Durbin from third and never looked back.
The Bears added four more runs in the second inning with a huge two-out rally. Baylor put together four consecutive hits concluding with a two RBI inside the park homerun past a diving Jason Wilson in centerfield by right fielder David Murphy. Baylor led 5-0 after just two innings.
Baylor continued the scoring against Faught in the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by left fielder Michael Griffin and designated hitter Blake Womble making the score 7-0. Faught left the game after pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing nine hits and seven runs, of which five were earned. Right-hander Kevin Ardoin came in to pitch for Faught. Baylor put three more runs on the scoreboard against Ardoin in the fourth inning to take a 10-run lead.
UL Lafayette scored its first run of the game off Baylor starter Steven White (1-0) when Jason Wilson hit a leadoff double and scored on a RBI ground out by shortstop Dallas Morris in the fifth inning.
Baylor scored for the fifth consecutive inning in the bottom half of the fifth by adding two more runs against
Ardoin highlighted by a RBI triple from Baylor centerfielder Chris Durbin making the score 12-1.
The Cajuns added another run in the sixth inning after Phillip Hawke singled to extend his hitting streak to six games and third baseman Rhett Buras drove in Hawke with an RBI single to right field.
UL Lafayette scored two more runs off Baylor reliever Andy Pape in the eighth inning. Bryan Sneed picked up his third RBI of the season scoring Corey Coles to make the final margin 12-4.
Austin Faught suffered his first loss of the season for the Cajuns. Baylor starter Steven White got the win for the Bears after throwing seven innings and only giving up two runs on six hits.
UL Lafayette (2-5) will return to the friendly confines of M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field to host the Northwestern State Demons this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., beginning a five-game homestand. The Ragin' Cajuns will host Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday, Feb. 19 also at 6:30 p.m. before beginning a weekend series with Troy State on Friday, Feb. 21 at 6:35 p.m. in a game which will be televised in the Lafayette viewing area on KLAF Channel 17.
