LAS CRUCES, N.M. - For the second straight year against the Ragin Cajuns, New Mexico State shot very well from three-point range at the Pan American Center. The Aggies hit 11 three pointers on their way to a 71-51 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night in Las Cruces, N.M.
Last year, NMSU hit a NCAA record 21 three pointers in a 94-62 route of UL Lafayette.
The game appeared to be headed toward another route, as the Aggies (13-10, 7-4) led 56-38 midway through the second half. The Cajuns (5-17, 1-10) responded with a 9-0 run which cut the Aggies lead to just nine points with exactly six minutes to play.
Sarah Richey, playing with four fouls, started the run by converting a nice baseline in-bounds play into a lay-up. Charlotte Green followed with a three pointer, before Richey hit a pair of free throws and another basket on the same in-bounds play to trim the score to 56-47.
As they had done all night, the Aggies deflated the Cajuns with three-pointers. Mari Sanchez launched a pair of treys to prompt NMSU to a 12-1 run over the final 4:30 to seal the victory.
Sinnamonn Garrett led the Aggies with 23 points, including a five-of-seven performance from behind the arc. Princess Moore contributed 13 points, while Jenean Ford added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Green and Richey were the only Cajuns in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Brooke Williams' basket on the opening possession of the second half brought the Cajuns to within three points, 28-25, but New Mexico State went on a 9-2 run to jettison to a 37-27 lead only three minutes into the half.
A lay-up by Ashley Blanche just interrupted the Aggies streak. NMSU rattled off seven straight points to take control of the game, 44-29.
The first half was closely contested in the opening 13 minutes. Both teams shared an identically shooting percentage, but the Aggies enjoyed a 20-18 lead thanks to four three-pointers.
NMSU then spurted to a 26-18 lead, before a three-pointer. by Sharee Glenn cut the lead to 26-21 with three minutes remaining in the opening half.
The teams traded baskets to end the half with NMSU ahead 28-23.
The Cajuns will return home for their final two home games of the season this Thursday and Saturday against Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock, respectively.
