LAFAYETTE, La.- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Lamar Invitational in a final tune-up for the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Championships next week.
The men's team finished in fourth place without top runner's Nick Bouterie and Justin Lemaire. UL Lafayette (76) finished behind McNeese St. (33), Lamar (49), and Northwestern St. (59).
Junior Chad Campbell led the Cajuns in 12th place individually with a time of 21:21.86 in the men's 4-mile race followed by Ben Schexnayder in 14th overall at 21:41.51.
Senior Walter Whitfield finished 16th overall with a time of 22:02.00 in his first race of the season. Following Whitfield in the standings came Nick Meaux, 17th in 22:07.93; Brennan Bernard, 22nd in 23:30.46; and Brian Verret, 24th in 23:50.84.
The women's team also finished fourth overall without it's leading runner Natalie Gillis. The Lady Cajuns scored 94 points and trailed Lamar (16), McNeese St. (47), and Northwestern St. (79).
Junior runner Laura Zaunbrecher led UL Lafayette by finishing 18th overall at 12:25.33 in the women's 2-mile race, followed by sister Analise Zaunbrecher in 21st with a time of 12:32.39.
Sophomores Leah Legere (22nd, 12:36.61), Stacey Enright (24th, 12:47.25), and Stacey Young (26th, 12:52.89) rounded out the field for the Lady Cajuns.
UL Lafayette will next compete in the 2003 Sun Belt Conference Championships from Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday, November 1st.
