Eight-Run Sixth Propels White Team to 12-6 Win in Fall World Series Opener

LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns White team won the first game of the best-of-five Fall World Series. Kraig Schambough picked up the win as the White team put up eight runs in the sixth inning on way to a 12-6 final.

Schambough pitched five innings and struck out five batters while surrendering two runs off of seven hits.

Redshirt freshman Jeremy Whipple took the loss for the Red squad after giving up three hits, three walks and being charged with four earned runs after relieving starter Kevin Ardoin to start the bottom of the sixth. Ardoin had kept the White team in check through five allowing just three hits while fanning four. .

The Red team jumped ahead early 2-0 lead, getting single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but fell behind never to regain the lead after the top of the sixth.

Justin Merendino led the charge for White with a leadoff single. Dallas Morris also added a single which was followed by a double off of the bat of Jason Rodriguez that scored Merendino for the White's first run of the game. With first base open, Brad Saloom was walked intentionally to load bases.

Unintentional walks issued to Justin Morgan and Alex Preciado brought in two more runs giving the White team a 3-2 lead.

Justin Boyette replaced Whipple with two outs in the inning. Josh Landry singled off of the new pitcher driving in a run as the base runners advanced off of a throwing error by the shortstop. Merindino came up to bat again, this time bringing in two with a double.

Philip Hawke had three hits including a homer and came around to score one of the runs for the Red Team.

White Team third baseman Dallas Morris finished with three hits on four at bats and also crossed the plate twice.

The Red Team will look to even the series Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Game time is set for 6pm. Admission is free to all Red-White Fall World Series games.
