2002 UL Lafayette Men's Cross Country Roster

CROSS COUNTRY SEE IMPROVEMENTS AT LSU INVITATIONAL September 21, 2002 BATON ROUGE, La.-The Ragin' Cajuns cross country team traveled to the LSU Invitational in hopes of improving upon their pervious performance. The men finished the day in fifth place with a team run of 2:21.46 in the 8K event, while the women ran the 5K with a time of 2:04.43, for eight place. Despite the final team rankings, the team saw numerous athletes improve their running times by almost two minutes.

Leading the men was freshman Justin LeMaire. In only his first two events as a Cajun, LeMaire has proved himself to be an important part of the Cajun team, setting the pace for the Cajuns with a time of 27:42.67. Finishing only a few places behind him were teammates, Nick Meaux (27:56.68) and Walter Whitfield (28:02.64).

On the women's side, junior Natalie Gillis was the Cajuns lone standout. Gillis finished as the top Cajun performer, placing 12th out of 79 competitors with a time of 22:59.71. The next Cajun finisher placed 44th, leaving a huge gap between Cajun athletes.

Head coach Lance Veazy contributed the difference to the lost of some key runners. "Senior Jeanne Menard had a mild sprained ankles and couldn't compete this week and the Zaunbrecher sisters are red-shirting this year."This leaves the Cajuns with a very inexperienced team with the bulk of the team being freshman and sophomores. However, the overall team's time was better than their opening meet.

The Cajuns will have next week off from competition and picked up the following week at the Arkansas Chili Pepper Invitational, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The course will be the longest the Cajuns face this season with the men running the 10K and the women running a 6K.
