CROSS COUNTRY IN MIDDLE OF PACK AT RAGIN' CAJUNS INVITE September 21, 2002 LAFAYETTE, La.-The Ragin' Cajuns cross country team kicked-off their season at home in the middle of the pack with 4th and 5th place finishes. The meet took place at Acadian Park with the men running 8K and the women a 5k.

Last year's champions Tulane, once again took top honors on the men side with 81 points. Not far behind them finished Lamar with 83 points for second place. The Cajuns finished the day in fourth with 128 points. Taking top honors in the 8K race was Grambling State's Feedly Bonneau, setting the pace at 27:29.

On the women's side, New Orleans claimed first with 49 points. They picked up huge points, having athletes take the number one (Pavlina Vondrkova) and two (Sarah Meza) spots. They were followed by last year's champions, Tulane with 52 points. The Cajuns finished fifth, collecting 102 points.

Top men runners for the Cajuns included Walter Whitfield, finishing 12th out of 72 runners with a time of 29:22. Six places behind him were Nick Meaux (29:51) and Justin LeMaire (29:56). Leading the team for the women were Jeanne Menard in fifth place and Natalie Gillis in sixth place with time of 19:27 and 19:57, respectively. There were 70 competitors running the women's 5K race.

The Cajuns next scheduled event is in Baton Rouge, La. at the LSU Invitational. The men will run an 8K and the women a 5K course.
