NIX RESIGNS AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH…March 4, 2002

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette head women's basketball coach Gay Nix resigned Monday after a six-year stint with the school.

Nix, whose 2001-02 squad went 7-21 overall and 1-14 in Sun Belt Conference play, leaves the Cajun program after compiling a 40-125 record. Her best season came in the 1999-2000 campaign, when she guided the Cajuns to a 12-16 mark.

The 12 wins were the program's most since the 1987-88 season and also came a year after a 1-26 season in '98-99. Nix came to Louisiana-Lafayette after a two-year assistant coaching stint at the University of New Orleans.

The north Louisiana native won seven state championships at the high school level, including back-to-back titles at C.E. Byrd High School in the '92-93 and '93-94 seasons.

Louisiana-Lafayette Director of Athletics Nelson Schexnayder says a coaching search will begin immediately.
