Soccer Successful at LSU Spring Meet
Monday, March 11, 2002
BATON ROUGE - UL Lafayette's women's soccer team won two matches and tied another before losing in the finals to the host LSU team in its first weekend tournament of the spring season.
Head coach Dave Poggi's Ragin' Cajun squad tied Tulane 0-0 before beating New Orleans Soccer Academy 1-0 and William Carey 2-0 in the qualifying rounds. UL lost to LSU 1-0 in the tournament finale in its fourth of four 45-minute games.
"I think we did great," said Poggi, whose team can have five playing dates during a spring exhibition season. "Our team defended really well, which I expected since that's what got us through last year, but we had a lot of improvement keeping possession of the ball. Our passing and decision making was much better."
Carencro goaltender Shelly Simon allowed only the one goal in four games, while Jenny Dugas had the winning goal against NOSA and Leslie Francis and Brooke Foy had the two goals in the win over William Carey.
"We only had 12 healthy players," Poggi said, "so to play like that with everybody getting that many minutes is really encouraging. We had no substitutions at all in the last game."
UL will host UL-Monroe and four club teams in a home tournament Sunday, with games to be played both at Moore Park in Carencro and at Cajun Field.
