Cajuns vs. McNeese

2/19/2002 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

In the final home contest of 2001-02, the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team defeated the McNeese State Cowgirls 72-63 to win their fourth consecutive non-conference game of the season.

The Cajuns upped their season mark to 7-19, while McNeese falls to 5-19.

On Senior Night, the Cajuns said good-bye to four of their finest, Breanna Evans, Carrie Fincher, DeLesha Qualls and Sarah Richey.

Fittingly, all four got into the action early.? Evans opened the scoring for the Cajuns with a quick bucket.? Richey and Fincher followed in between Evans' second basket to give UL Lafayette an 8-5 lead.? Qualls first basket capped an 8-0 Cajuns run to extend their lead to 22-13 midway into the first half.

The Cajuns largest home crowd of the season watched their team finish the half up 34-30, thanks, in part, to 16 first half turnovers by McNeese.

The first part of second half did not bode well for scoring.? The Cajuns managed only four points in the first five minutes, while McNeese notched eight points to tie the game at 38-38.

For the next three minutes, neither team could score a single point until Anna Petrakova hit a basket with 12:19 remaining.?

With the score tied at 43-43, the Cajuns offense awoke.? Gaining momentum, UL Lafayette used a 17-5 run to propel them out to a 60-48 advantage.

Evans led the Cajuns with 16 points, while Richey recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.? Alanna Simon and Petrakova both established career highs with nine and seven points, respectively.

For the second straight time in this series, MSU's Kellie Burbridge led all scorers with 24 points

The Cajuns will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday at New Mexico State.? The Sun Belt Conference tournament begins Feb. 28 in New Orleans.? The Cajuns will play the third seed in the SBC's East Division, who has yet to be determined.
